Austroblechnum colensoi - Colenso’s Hard Fern / Peretao / Petako
A distinctive and moisture-loving New Zealand native fern, valued for its arching, leathery fronds and suitability for deep shade. This species is best suited to cool, damp environments and makes an excellent addition to fern collections and shaded riparian plantings.

• Growth habit: Creeping fern with spreading rhizomes
• Sterile fronds: Drooping, leathery, shiny dark green; up to 60 cm long
• Frond form: Undivided or irregularly divided into a few leaflets
• Fertile fronds: Narrow with distinctive thread-like leaflets
• Height: Up to 1 m
• Flowering: N/A – spore producing

🌍 Natural Habitat
• Occurs from coastal to montane environments
• Typically found in seepages on shaded banks, rock overhangs, river gorges, and sodden cloud forest soils

🪴 Cultivation Notes (Live Plant)
A more specialist fern that requires consistent care:
• Deep shade and shelter essential
• Permanently moist soil required
• Will not tolerate drying out
• Slow growing but rewarding in the right conditions
Best suited to fernery environments, shaded gullies, or damp garden areas, where humidity and moisture can be maintained.
