





Phormium tenax - NZ Flax, Harakeke
NZ Flax (Harakeke) is native to New Zealand, thriving in a wide range of environments, from coastal swamps to low montane areas. Harakeke plants are highly attractive to Tui and other birds. They form in clumps and feature stiff, erect leaves that can grow up to 3 meters long, with flowering stalks reaching between 1.5 to 4 meters. The flowers are typically brownish-red, and the seed capsules remain more or less erect after blooming.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Frost, Sun, Salt, Wetland, Wind, Coastal, and Free-draining soils
• Endemic Distribution: Found throughout New Zealand and Norfolk Island. Distinct variants occur in the Chatham Islands, Three Kings, Hauraki Gulf Islands, and along the Kaikoura coast.
Specifications:
• Height: 3.5 meters
• Flowering: October – November (occasionally as early as September) with red/pink or yellow flowers
• Fruiting: December – March
Ideal Uses:
• Bird food / Attractant
