Pōhutukawa is a magnificent New Zealand native flowering tree with a short trunk and wide-spreading branches. This large, sprawling coastal tree features leathery oval leaves and produces masses of vibrant red bristly flowers over Christmas, lending itself to another of its common names “New Zealand Christmas Tree”.
A stunning specimen tree that thrives in coastal conditions, providing excellent shelter and attracting birds and bees.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Sun, salt, wind, coastal, and free-draining soils.
Endemic Distribution:
• Naturally occurring in Three Kings Islands and the North Island, from North Cape tonorthern Taranaki and the Mahia Peninsula.
• Also found inland around Rotorua Lakes and Lake Taupō, possibly due to historic Māori plantings.
• Widely cultivated throughout New Zealand, including Nelson, the Marlborough Sounds, the Kaikōura Coast, and as far south as Dunedin.

• Flowering: (August–) November–December (–March) (Red/Pink flowers)
• Fruiting: (January–) March–April (–May)
