Cordyline australis - Cabbage Tree
The Cabbage Tree (Ti Kouka, Torbay Palm) is one of New Zealand’s most iconic trees, thriving in diverse habitats across the country. Young trees feature long, narrow, mid-green leaves (30-100cm x 3-6cm) sprouting from a single trunk, giving them a grass-like appearance. As they mature, they branch out, forming a striking silhouette with lush terminal foliage.
This tree can grow up to 20m tall, making it an excellent specimen for landscaping, whether used for group plantings, specimen trees, or even container growth. It produces large, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in late spring and summer, followed by small white berries in early autumn, which attract birds and bees.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Frost, sun, drought, shade, salt, wetland, wind, and coastal environments.
• Endemic Distribution: Common across North, South, and Stewart Islands; likely naturalised in the Chatham Islands.
