





Astelia fragrans - Bush Flax, Kakaha, Bush Lilly
Kakaha (Astelia fragrans), commonly known as Bush Flax or Bush Lilly, is the most common species of Astelia found in New Zealand. It features long, sword-like green leaves, sometimes with red midribs. In the center of the plant, it produces clumps of green flowers between October and November, followed by bright orange fruit during the summer months (December – March). It thrives in a wide range of environments and is well-suited for coastal, wetland, and drought-prone areas.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Sand, sun, drought, shade, salt, wetland, wind, coastal conditions, and free-draining soils.
• Endemic Distribution: Found commonly throughout New Zealand.
Specifications:
