Sophora microphylla - Kowhai, Small Leaved Kowhai

The Small Leaved Kowhai is a medium to tall tree with one or more trunks. Widely regarded by New Zealanders as the country’s national flower, Kowhai are among the most beautiful of New Zealand’s flowering trees. This species is primarily coastal, though it also grows on alluvial river terraces, flood plains, and lake margins in mixed podocarp/hardwood forests. Kowhai is a popular native tree often planted in large gardens and parks.

Growing Environment:

• Tolerances: Frost, Sun, Drought, Salt, Coastal, and Free draining soils

• Endemic Distribution: Found throughout the main islands of New Zealand, but scarce in parts of Northland.

Specifications:

• Height: 20 meters

• Flowering: August – October (with yellow flowers)

• Fruiting: October – May (with a dry brown pea-like seed pod)

Ideal Uses:

• Bird attractant

• Bee food

• Riparian plantings

• Flowering ornamental
