The Forest Cabbage Tree (Ti Ngahere) is a small, palm-like forest tree with multiple erect branches, each crowned with tufts of long, pointed green leaves. The foliage is tough and narrow, tapering into a long leaf stalk that expands to enclose the stem. During late spring and summer, it produces beautifully scented white flowers, which attract native birds and bees. In autumn, it bears small, whitish fruit that further supports wildlife.

Growing Conditions:

• Tolerances: Frost, salt, wind, and coastal environments.

• Endemic Distribution: Common throughout the North Island; widespread in the northern half of the South Island, extending west to Haast and with occasional unverified reports in Fiordland.

Specifications:

• Height: Up to 4m

• Flowering: White flowers from November – January

• Fruiting: Small whitish fruit from February – April

Ideal Uses:

• Bird food / Attractant

• Bee food

• Riparian plantings
