





Sophora tetraptera - Large-Leaved Kōwhai
Large-Leaved Kōwhai (Sophora tetraptera) is a native New Zealand leguminous tree with larger leaves and blooms than the Small-Leaved Kōwhai (Sophora microphylla). It produces bright yellow flowers from September to November, attracting birds and bees.
This species flowers at a younger age and is a hardy, fast-growing tree.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Frost, sun, coastal conditions, and free-draining soils.
• Endemic distribution: Found naturally in eastern North Island, from East Cape to Wairarapa, extending west to Taihape, Lake Taupō, and the Waikato River. It is widely planted and naturalised beyond this range.
Specifications:
• Height: Up to 7m.
• Flowering: (September-) October – December (yellow flowers).
• Fruiting: October – May, producing dry brown pea-like seed pods.
Ideal Uses:
• Bird food / Attractant (tūī, bellbirds, and kererū).
• Bee food.
