Macropiper excelsum - Kawakawa, Pepper Tree
Kawakawa is a dense shrub commonly found in shady areas and forests throughout the North Island, extending as far south as Banks Peninsula in the South Island. It grows to around 2- 6 meters in height and is known for its heart-shaped leaves with prominent veining. The leaves are medium to dark green, turning lighter in more open situations.
The male and female flowers are tiny and grow on separate spikes, with the female plant producing orange berries that resemble “candles.” These berries are ornamental and contribute to the plant’s aesthetic value. Although it is a great plant for shady areas, the leaves are often attacked by a caterpillar, which might be a concern for some gardeners.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Frost, Sun, Shade, Salt, Coastal, and Free draining soils
• Endemic Distribution: Found throughout New Zealand, from Te Paki south to Okarito, North Canterbury, and Banks Peninsula
