Hoheria populnea - Lacebark, Houhere
A fast-growing and attractive New Zealand native tree, lacebark is valued for its showy white flowers, soft foliage, and usefulness as a quick shelter or hedging species. Its light structure and rapid growth make it ideal for restoration and landscape planting.
🌱 Plant Facts
• Growth habit: Soft-wooded small tree
• Foliage: Leathery, toothed leaves (7–14 cm long)
• Juvenile form: Distinctive zig-zagging branches with much smaller leaves (1–3 cm)
• Flowers: Large, showy white flowers
• Fruit: Winged, dry capsules
• Height: Up to 6 m
• Flowering: January – March
• Fruiting: April – June
🌍 Natural Habitat
• Occurs from coastal to montane forest
• Common in kauri (Agathis australis) forest and associated regenerating forest
• Also found in pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) dominated coastal forest

• Drought tolerant
• Shade tolerant
• Wind tolerant
Highly adaptable and suitable for a wide range of planting conditions.
📍 Endemic Distribution
• Native to the North Island, from North Cape south to northern Waikato and Coromandel
• Widely planted and often naturalised throughout the southern North Island, South, Stewart, and Chatham Islands

🪴 Cultivation Notes (Live Plant)
A fast-growing but relatively short-lived tree, ideal for quick shelter and early-stage planting. Establishes easily and often self-seeds near mature plants. May be susceptible to Hoheria dieback, which can affect longevity. Best used as a temporary shelter or nurse species alongside longer-lived natives.
