Pittosporum tenuifolium - Kohuhu, Black Matipo
Kohuhu, also known as Black Matipo, is an extremely adaptable and quick-growing pittosporum found throughout New Zealand, except for the west coast of the South Island. This plant features shiny light green leaves, which are often variable in size and colour, with wavy margins.
Kohuhu works well in full sun to promote a tight habit, and in warmer areas, it requires regular pruning to maintain a tidy shape. It’s best planted in dry conditions in humid climates to avoid winter leaf drop caused by damp conditions.
Growing Environment:
• Tolerances: Coastal, Frost, Drought, Salt, Wind, and Free-draining
• Endemic Distribution: Widespread throughout New Zealand
Specifications:
• Height: 9 meters
• Flowering: October – November with black, red/pink flowers
• Fruiting: January – March
Ideal Uses:
• Bird attractant
• Bee food
• Hedging
• Riparian plantings
• Shelter belts
Kohuhu is ideal for those looking to add a dense, pyramidal shrub that attracts wildlife, serves as shelter, or makes a striking contrast in garden plantings.
