Rhopalostylis sapida - Nikau, Millionaire’s Palm
The Nikau Palm is New Zealand’s only native palm and the southernmost palm species in the world. Recognisable for its tall, slender trunk and lush green fronds, it grows slowly but makes a striking specimen in a protected position. As a forest dweller, it prefers shady, sheltered sites, which help maintain darker, more vibrant fronds. Wind- exposed locations can cause frond tips to dry out.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Sun, shade, salt, coastal exposure, and free-draining soils.
• Endemic Distribution: Throughout the North Island. South Island; Found from Marlborough Sounds and Nelson south to Okarito (West Coast) and Banks Peninsula (East Coast).
Specifications:
• Height: Up to 15m.
• Flowering: November – April (pinkish flowers in multiple spikes at the top of the trunk).
• Fruiting: February – November (bright red fruit, a favourite for native birds).
Ideal Uses:
• Bird food / Attractant
• Bee food
• Forest revegetation
• Container planting (suitable for pots when young)
