Lophomyrtus obcordata - Rohutu

from $8.00

Rohutu is a small shrub with fine bronze/red leaves that gives it a unique and attractive appearance. The plant’s bark is mottled with patches of grey, cream, and greenish/cream, adding to its ornamental value. The white flowers are distinct, with showy white stamens, and they give way to bright red to dark red (sometimes black) fruit that ripens from January to May. This hardy species is well-suited to making a beautiful hedge or screen in the garden.

Growing conditions:

• Tolerances: Frost, Sun, and Free-draining conditions

• Endemic Distribution: Found throughout New Zealand’s North and South Islands, though patchy and often absent in some areas. More common in the eastern North and South Islands, and locally prominent in parts of western Northland and Auckland.

Specifications:

• Height: 5 meters

• Flowering: November-March with cream or white flowers

• Fruiting: January-May with red to black fruit

Ideal Uses:

• Bird food/attractant

• Bee food
