Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’ - Purple Akeake

from $6.00

A stunning purple-leaved form of Dodonaea viscosa, first discovered on the banks of the Wairau River in Marlborough in the 1890s. This fast-growing small tree has the same height and growth habit as the green-leaved Akeake (Dodonaea viscosa) but features striking dark purple foliage.

It can be used in hedging, screening, or riparian plantings and adds a rich colour contrast to mixed shrub plantings. The purple foliage intensifies in winter, especially when planted in poorer soils.

Growing Conditions:

• Tolerances: Full sun, coastal, salt-resistant, free-draining & wind tolerant

• Endemic Distribution: Three Kings, North, South, and Chatham Islands of New Zealand. Also found worldwide.

Specifications:

• Height: 3-12m

• Flowering: August – November, with red/pink or yellow flowers

• Fruiting: November – April

Ideal Uses:

• Hedges

• Riparian plantings

• Ornamental contrast in mixed plantings

Purple Akeake is a low-maintenance, fast-growing option for coastal gardens, shelter-belts, and ornamental plantings, providing year-round colour and resilience.

Approximate product size & price:

• PB3/4 (5cm – 20cm, 350ml): $6 each | 9 for $45

• PB3 (20cm – 70cm, 1.5L): $12 each | 5 for $50

• PB8 (50cm+, 3.5L): $24 each | 4 for $80
