Totara is a large, iconic native New Zealand tree found in lowland forests from sea level to 500 meters. This conifer is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable trees, known for its thick, stringy bark and dark green, sharply pointed leaves. Totara makes a striking specimen tree and is also highly valued for its durable timber. It is a versatile tree that can grow in a wide range of sites, including very exposed and partially shaded locations. Totara can also be clipped to form a dense hedge.

Growing Environment:

• Tolerances: Sun, Drought, Salt, Wind, Coastal, and Free-draining

• Endemic Distribution: Common throughout most of the North and South Islands. Extremely scarce on Stewart Island (Freshwater River).

Specifications:

• Height: 30 meters

• Flowering: October – December (with no visible flowers)

• Fruiting: The fruit takes about one year to ripen, with a peak fruiting period typically between April and May, around the same time cones are produced.

Ideal Uses:

• Bird attractant

• Bee food

• Hedging

• Riparian plantings

• Shade trees

• Forests

• Timber

• Shelter belts

We ship Monday – Wednesday for South Island customers and Monday/Tuesday for Rural and North Island customers. Orders placed outside these days will be fulfilled the following week.
