





Coprosma robusta - Karamu
Coprosma robusta, commonly known as Karamu, is a fast-growing forest and scrubland shrub that thrives throughout New Zealand. It resembles Coprosma repens but has less glossy, leathery leaves. This species is ideal for shelter and pioneer plantings, making it a valuable windbreak while helping to establish other plantings. It is highly adaptable and can be pruned for a more compact shape.
Growing Conditions:
• Tolerances: Drought, shade, salt, wind, and coastal environments.
• Endemic Distribution: Found in both the North and South Islands. Also naturalised on the Chatham Islands within a small area between Waitangi and Owenga.
Specifications:
• Height: Up to 6m.
• Flowering: Green or white flowers from July – November.
• Fruiting: Red/orange fruit from March – July.
