Dodonaea viscosa var. green - Green Akeake

from $6.00

Akeake is a small upright tree that grows 3-12m tall and is found in coastal and lowland scrub and forests from North Cape to Banks Peninsula. This hardy species features long, narrow, light green leaves with slightly wavy margins. Male and female flowers occur on separate trees, and its papery, creamy-coloured seed capsules are a distinctive feature from summer to autumn.

Akeake is an excellent choice for screening and windbreaks, as it grows quickly, tolerates coastal winds and dryness, and can be clipped into a hedge. When left unpruned, it develops into an attractive small tree.

Growing Conditions:

• Tolerances: Full sun, coastal, salt, free draining & wind tolerant

• Endemic Distribution: Three Kings, North, South, and Chatham Islands of New Zealand. Also found worldwide.

Specifications:

• Height: 3-12m

• Flowering: August – November, with red/pink or yellow flowers

• Fruiting: November – April

Ideal Uses:

• Hedges

• Riparian plantings

Akeake is an ideal plant for wind protection, hedging, and coastal planting, offering both resilience and ornamental appeal.
