Plant facts:

An indigenous, weedy herb found in New Zealand and Australia. It is an erect annual or short-lived perennial, growing up to 2 m tall. Easily recognised by its woolly stems, deeply toothed leaves, and clusters of dark yellow flower heads. It commonly establishes in disturbed sites and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions.

Natural habitat: 

Typically a weedy species found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, riverbanks, coastal margins, and open coastal and lowland sites.

Growing environment:

Dry, Wetland, Coastal, Disturbed soils tolerant.

 

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s North, South, Stewart, Chatham, and Three Kings Islands and also Australia.

Flowering: 

Throughout the year (mainly summer) with numerous small, dark yellow flower heads grouped in large clusters up to 30cm wide.

 

Fruiting:

Late summer to early winter but can be found year round.

Pioneer Plantings.

 

How to grow:

Easily grown from seed. Prefers open, disturbed soils and establishes quickly with minimal care.

 

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. Sow seed direct & keep moist until germination is complete.
