About:
The largest of the New Zealand Pterostylis species, this remarkable plant can grow to an impressive height of 30-45cm when it is in full bloom. The narrow, elongated leaves typically reach about 25cm in length, contributing to its distinctive appearance. In the spring and extending into early summer, it produces hooded green flowers that can reach heights of up to 5cm; these flowers are sometimes beautifully streaked with red, adding a touch of colour. This species prefers gritty soil or an orchid mix and thrives best in a shady environment. For those interested in cultivation, it can also be successfully grown in pots, making it a versatile choice for plant enthusiasts.
Natural habitat:
Coastal to montane (up to 800 m a.s.l.). In indigenous or exotic forests and shrub-land.

How to grow:
Difficult - should not be removed from the wild. Basic orchid mix consists of 2 parts medium coarse sand, ideally clean river sand; 2 parts soil, humus or leaf-mould; 1 part weathered sawdust or rotting wood; 1 part granulated bark. For Pterostylis shade of 50% and pots kept evenly moist.
** Seed germinates without pre treatment. 4 weeks cold stratification will help speed this up though
