Plant facts:

A small lancewood-like plant that prefers higher altitudes in mountainous regions. The leaves are narrow and elongated, showcasing thick, dark green foliage, which prominently features a striking pale-coloured mid rib. This plant produces a purple-coloured fruit that typically ripens between January and February, adding to its seasonal charm.

 

Natural habitat:

Montane to low alpine forests in damper regions mainly west of the Main Divide.

 

Growing environment:

Frost, Shade, Wetland & Wind tolerant.

 

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s South Island in Fiordland, the Southern Alps and Northwest Nelson

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed. Seeds usually germinate in the spring after a chilling in the cold compost, regardless of when they are sown.

 

** The seeds are perishable and cannot be dry stored. After collection & cleaning the seed should be placed in cold storage.
