From January to April, it produces black fruit that is particularly appealing to birds, especially bellbirds, which is the reason behind its common name. Natural habitat:
Found in lowland forests and forest margins, often on stream banks.
Growing environment:
Frost & Shade tolerant.
Endemic distribution:
Found throughout the New Zealand’s North, South and Stewart Islands although uncommon north of Auckland and on Stewart Island.
