About:

This species forms beautiful rosettes of leaves that are noticeably covered in fine white hairs, giving it a distinctive appearance. In early summer, it carries clusters of yellow to bronzish scented flowers that add charm to its surroundings. This is a more widespread species commonly found in wetter areas, stretching from Nelson to Otago. Like several other related species, it can unfortunately be prone to mildew attacks, which may affect its overall health and vigour.

Natural habitat:

Alpine. Common in damp sites within grassland, on rocky ground, on cliff faces and rock outcrops

Growing environment:

Frost, Sun, Shade, Wind & Free draining tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s South Island from Nelson to south-western Otago and northern Southland

Height: 30cm

December - March with a bronzish yellow coloured flower/s

How to grow:

Somewhat difficult. Can be grown in a rock garden or alpine house but results vary. Like all indigenous Myosotis this species is sensitive to humidity and prone to fungal attacks from mildews and rusts in muggy weather. In some parts of New Zealand, such as the South Island this species can be easily cultivated.

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. 4 weeks cold stratification will help speed this up though
