About:
A spreading wetland plant that is similar to M. novae-zelandine but typically larger in size overall, features somewhat hairy leaves and displays showier flowers that can reach sizes of up to 23 cm across. These attractive flowers are notably white, beautifully flecked with vibrant purple and yellow hues. The plant prefers to have some moisture; however, it is adaptable and can grow successfully in a diverse range of soil conditions, making it a resilient choice for wetland environments.
Natural habitat:
It is found in lowland swamp forest, sparsely-vegetated coastal wetlands and in moist sub-alpline areas from 100 – 1100m.
Growing environment:
Frost, Sun, Shade, Wetland, Coastal & Wind tolerant.
Endemic distribution:
Throughout New Zealand’s main Islands. In the south it is a common wetland/swamp weed.

How to grow:
Easily grown from fresh seed or division. Best suited to a permanently moist or poorly draining soil in the shade.
** Seed germinates without pre treatment. 4 weeks cold stratification will help speed this up though
