I. prolifera is a remarkable species of flowering plant that typically thrives in various temperate regions found in the Southern Hemisphere. This intriguing plant exhibits leafless stems that can reach impressive heights of up to 90 cm, showcasing its unique growth form. Additionally, it produces beautiful clusters of flowers that frequently proliferate into branching structures, adding to its distinct appearance and ecological significance.

Natural habitat:

Coastal to lower montane. Mostly in open, freshwater wetland systems - eutrophic or oligotrophic. Sometimes an aggressive weed in farm dams. Often invading poorly drained pasture and old cattle troughs. It is highly palatable to livestock which often wade out into wetlands seeking it.

Sun, Wetland, Wind & Coastal tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s North, South and Chatham Islands. Also Australia and South Africa

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed and by division of whole plants. Once established rather tolerant of a range of conditions but flourishes best in full sun in a permanently damp soil. An attractive pot plant but can become invasive in some situations.

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. Sow seed direct & keep moist until germination is complete.
