About:

A decorative and truly beautiful species of hard fern, characterised by its low spreading habit and erect rhizome structure. This hardy plant is easily cultivated as long as a protected, moist spot is found, making it adaptable to various garden environments. It serves as an excellent ground cover, well-suited to group plantings where it can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the landscape.

Natural habitat:

Elevated sites with dappled sunlight. Also damp, shady areas in acidic, moist and boggy soil, beside streams in forest areas. Nowadays you will often find it on track sides, which also give the extra light it likes - but not full sun.

Growing environment:

Shade & Wetland tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

Throughout much of New Zealand's forests, including much of the forested area of North Island; west, north and south coasts of South Island; and Stewart Island/Rakiura; also occurs in coastal forests of southeast Australia.
