About:

A variable shrub that typically grows to about 2m in height, it is well clothed with an abundance of small, leathery yellowish-green leaves that enhance its appearance. The shrub produces attractive berries that are vibrant red in colour. This plant can be found in diverse habitats, including forest and scrub environments, particularly in montane areas stretching from the Raukumara Range to the regions further southward. Notably, it is cold and wind hardy, making it resilient in less favourable weather conditions.

Montane to subalpine scrub and shrubland.

Growing environment:

Frost, Sun, Wind, Shade & Free draining tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s Raukumara range in the North Island of New Zealand south as far as Stewart Island at an altitude range of 240–1525m. On Mt Taranaki/Egmont it is found in subalpine scrub and shrubland from 1100 to 1400 metres above sea level.

How to grow:

Easy from fresh seed, and semi-hardwood cuttings.
