About:

A shrub featuring pairs of slender, pale green leaves that emit a strongly unpleasant odour reminiscent of dung when crushed. The leaves measure approximately 1 to 2cm in length and exhibit veins that are not easily visible on the underside. These leaves are broadest at the middle and gradually taper down towards both the tip and the base. Additionally, there are small, dark teeth located between the bases of the leaf pairs, contributing to their unique appearance. The fruits produced by this shrub are typically yellow or orange in colour, adding a striking contrast to its foliage.

Natural habitat:

Coastal to subalpine forest, shrub-land and occasionally grasslands as well.

Growing environment:

Sun, Wind, Shade, Coastal & Free draining tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s North, South, Stewart and Auckland Islands. Occurring from Moehau in North Island southwards.

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed. Also easy from semi-hardwood cuttings.

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. 4 weeks cold stratification will help speed this up though.
