About:

A prostrate species typically growing to about 60cm in height, this plant features divaricating branches and very small, narrow leaves. The female plant is known to often produce an abundant crop of bright orange-red berries, which can add a vibrant splash of colour to its surroundings. It is commonly found in shrubland, tussock, and bogs within montane areas throughout the South Island of New Zealand, as well as on the Central Plateau and the Ruahine Range located in the North Island. This resilient species will thrive even on exposed sites, showcasing its adaptability to various environments.

Natural habitat:

Montane to subalpine 400-1500m, tussock-grassland, shrubland, bog forest, often permanently damp areas.

Growing environment:

Frost, Sun, Shade, Wetland, Wind tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

North, South and Stewart Islands of New Zealand. Locally from Mount Hikurangi southwards.

How to grow:
