About:

A rare species of broom, specifically confined to the unique ecosystems surrounding Lake Ellesmere near Banks Peninsula. It typically exhibits a low growth habit, forming a dense, spreading mat that can reach widths of up to 2m. Additionally, this remarkable plant features beautiful pinkish-purple flowers that add to its charm and visual appeal.

Natural habitat:

A species of gravelly sandy loam, stabilised sand dunes, and ridges of sand developed along the Kaitorete Spit.

Growing environment:

Frost, Sun, Wind, Coastal & Free Draining tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s South Island, Kaitorete Spit and probably also the mouth of Rakaia River.

Height: 30cm

Flowering:

October - January with a Violet/Purple or White coloured flower/s.

Fruiting:

December – May with a small dry pointed pod containing 1-3 hard dark purple to black seeds.

Uses:

Bird food / Attractant & Bee food

Easily grown from seed and hardwood cuttings.
