About:

A native tussock reaching 40cm, ideal for use as ground cover or as an understory plant. The ribbed leaves display a vibrant bright green, contrasting with dark brown seed heads borne on stems that are slightly shorter than the leaf blades. This plant thrives in forests, scrub, swamps, or wetlands. Additionally, it is effective for erosion control and stormwater retention.

Natural habitat:

Lowland to montane. Usually in riparian forest, where it may be abundant along stream sides.

Growing environment:

Frost, Drought, Shade, Wetland & Wind tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s North, South and Stewart Islands.

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed and by the division of established plants. A popular species in cultivation, though many plants sold as this species are in fact C. solandri. Excellent for a permanently damp situation in a shaded site but will tolerate full sun and dry conditions once established.
