About:
A majestic large native toetoe species endemic to northern New Zealand. This impressive coastal grass is known for its enormous flowering plumes, broad flexible foliage, and powerful architectural form.
Natural habitat:
Occurs naturally in coastal dunes, cliff faces, sandy shrublands, offshore islands, and semi-consolidated dune systems.
Growing environment:
Full sun, Coastal exposure, Wind tolerant & Free-draining soils.
Thrives in sandy coastal conditions and tolerates salt-laden winds and dry exposed sites.
Endemic distribution:
Endemic to New Zealand.
Occurs from the Three Kings Islands south to Waikawau on the west coast and Ohiwa Harbour on the east coast of the North Island.

Flowering:

Produces large cream to silvery-white flowering plumes from September to November.

Appearance:
Growth habit:
A very large rhizomatous tussock-forming grass with broad arching foliage and tall dramatic flowering culms.
Leaves:
Leaves are broad, flexible, yellow-green to dark green, with dense hairs near the leaf bases and softly arching growth.
Flowers:
Produces large feathery cream-white plumes which may be upright or gracefully drooping.
Seed heads:
Large silky seed plumes persist through summer and autumn and disperse readily by wind.
