About:

A native, evergreen tussock grass that is more commonly and widely referred to as Toetoe. This resilient plant thrives in full sun where soils are well-drained and free from excessive moisture, and is usually seen growing naturally in coastal locations. The distinctive flowers begin to emerge in September and continue to bloom through into November, creating a beautiful display. When in full flower, the plants may reach impressive heights of up to 6m, making them a striking feature in their natural habitat.

Natural habitat:

Abundant in coastal situations, within dunefield, associated shrublands, on cliff faces and on offshore islands.

Growing environment:

Sun, Drought, Salt, Wind & Coastal tolerant.

Endemic distribution:

A northern species common from the Three Kings Islands south to about Waikawau in the west and Ohiwa Harbour in the east - exact southern limit unclear.

Height: 3-6m

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed (as a revegation exercise ripe seed heads can be pinned to soil surface, and if kept damp, soon germinate) and division of established plants.

 

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. Sow seed direct & keep moist until germination is complete.
