About:
An upright ground fern species that is commonly found throughout the diverse landscapes of New Zealand, typically thriving in drier forested areas. This fern is particularly ideal for creating visually pleasing underplanting displays when grouped together in large quantities, especially in areas that receive dappled light. It demonstrates a preference for light, well-drained soil that retains good moisture levels. This fern’s common name provides a hint towards its distinctive growing habit. It develops a unique “crown-like” formation of fronds atop a small trunk, referred to as a caudex. The contrasting colours and textures of new and old fronds contribute to its interesting and appealing overall appearance. Crown fern is frequently observed in our native bush landscapes, often forming impressive large colonies that enhance the natural beauty of the environment.
