About:

This bushy woody shrub is characterised by its erect branches that are densely covered with small, hard leaves measuring approximately 4-7mm in length. This resilient plant species predominantly inhabits areas of shrub lands. The twigs of the Tamingi are uniquely adorned with small hairs, adding to its textured appearance. The leaves themselves are distinctly widest at their middle section and showcase three darker green lines on their underside. In terms of reproduction, the flowers are usually white and appear solitary at the base of the leaves, although several flowers may also develop along each twig.


Natural habitat: 

Frequently found in acidic bogs, pakihi and gum-land scrub.


Growing environment:

Wetland, Coastal tolerant.


Endemic distribution:

New Zealand’s North and South Islands from Te Paki south to near Charleston on the west coast of the South Island.

January – December with a red/pink or white coloured flower/s.

Fruiting:

Throughout the year.

Uses: 

Bird food / Attractant, Bee food & Riparian plantings.

How to grow:

Easily grown from fresh seed.

 

** Seed germinates without pre treatment. 4 weeks cold stratification will help speed this up though
